Hey, Karl
A few months ago I wanted to walk around the world. I looked at the world map to see how I would get over the Bering Strate and watched a little bid on Google. I found out you had gone over it and you even had been walking around the world from Chili. I was a little disappointed that someone already was doing it but I'm again planning to walk around the world. I'll be walking from Belgium to Chili but heard from some guys that it was becoming harder and harder to get over the Bering Strate with the warming of the earth, etc. I'll be starting in two years with my journey.
You've been a big inspiration for me, especially the story's and pictures from in South America were you look more adventures. Maybe you should just get back "undercover" and go trough Russia like that. I know it isn't just that easy but yeah ...
If you ever need a place to stay in Belgium the door is open (if I'm still home than). I'm only 16 years old (I know it's young to start walking around the world) that's also why I'll be leaving in 2 years when I'm done with school (in Belgium it's until 18).
Greats Harald

Hello Karl,
You are an inspiration. In January, I will be setting off on my own long trek: 5400 miles from the Florida Keys, North, to Belle Isle, Canada. One of my companions on this trip will be a copy of “Giant Steps”. A friend of mine and I are hatching plans for a future (several years from now) mega-walk that we have dubbed the “Reverse Human Migration”: a walk from Tierra Del Fuego to the Rift Valley. Your writings and experiences will be/are invaluable for our thinking and planning.
Many, Many Thanks for sharing your life’s journey.
Allbest, John-Michael Hernandez Trailname: Hump’en Relentless (H.R.) HuffnPuff (or to some, Ground Control)

Karl, I just found your site and I am very impressed by what you have done so far. I wish I was well connected and rich so I could help you get through Russia. I am sure it is possible. That one guy who knows a guy is out there. He or she is waiting to be found...the proverbial gate keeper. It sucks that you can't escape bureaucratic human constructs. You deserve better and more people advocating on your behalf. What is wrong with those crazy Russians? What is wrong with western diplomats. Your sense of freedom makes them uncomfortable. Your Britishness makes them uncomfortable. It is all about the fight... We have 80 years at the most on this planet you are making the most of yours even if it doesn't seem like it at the moment. I finished a miniscule 8 month 3,100 mile across the U.S. in May. Finishing was the worst thing about the walk. The good news for you is you are not done. Being done is the worst. If you have to stay in Mexico for another decade stay there. Don't go back home. Ignore the doubters. They have no moral ground to judge you. Again I am extremely impressed by your commitment and know you will succeed as long as you don't go home. I'll brainstorm for you. Who knows I may come up with an idea or run into that guy. All the best, Rory Fanning --Chicago, IL U.S.A. walkforpat.org

Hi Karl,
First of all I read your book back in 2006 I think it was. I read it whilst on holiday in France which actually became for memorable than the holiday itself! However, after revisiting your site again 3 years later I hardly recognise you. I know you are having a hard time of it at the moment, but maybe it is better not to be so public with the issues and your thoughts. I hate to say it but this but your frame of mind may put some sponsors off. Please note this is an observation and not a criticism.
I have just read part of your Nov 1st update and I just can't believe you feel the need to respond or justify yourself to these negative responders. They haven't got a clue what energy, commitment and self sacrifice you have put into this expedition. It is because of your personal investment that your story is so impressive and inspirational. I can tell you this, most people wouldn't last more than a couple of weeks on the road like you did in the Americas, with very little financial resource and relying on the goodwill of the people you pass by. You do not need to justify yourself to anyone!
You made the first successful crossing of the Bering straits, just remember that! That puts you up there with Chris Bonnington, Edmund Hilary and most other great explorers. You just need someone to take this marketing headache off you and sell your achievements to the highest bidder. To be honest I am stunned that sponsorship has been an issue at all.
Just ignore my next paragraph if this is old news, but have you tried contacting Richard Branson, or Ewan Mcgregor? Try Branson for sponsorship and people like Ewan for publicity. Your project is not mainstream, so in my humble opinion you need to target non conventional supporters and stars. You need a few celebs on your side to get the chatter going again :-)
P.S I hope you got my email and invitation to Transylvania if you walk across Europe that far south. You better be there within two years otherwise I will...

Big thanks to all those helping and contributing, we appreciate all the support. I will get back on the ground at some point not to worry. But for now, while we look for opportunities and partners, I will keep building and working on the foundations to try ensure I never find myself in a situation like this again. Just made a small donation. It alone won't get you back into Russia but I hope it will support the positive mood that the expedition seems to have gotten back. There is lots of adventure waiting in Siberia and I hope to be reading about it in the near future.
