I am a fan. I had the same Idea to cross the bearing strait on foot about 2 years ago when I found out that Bushby had done it in the previous year. I'm only upset that I didn't think of it first.

  Continued from previous entry ....

• No link to or mention of your book - as others have suggested, wouldn't a link to the Amazon page (for example) be a good way to raise funds ?

It's very tempting to crowd a home page with everything you can think of, rather than lead people into the site with a carefully selected choice of places to find, hiearchically organised (try a tree structure to see what your organisation does and where it could be simplified). Not easy at all to get this right, but at the moment I think you fall on the former rather than latter side, and you risk not getting your message across.

Don't give up, Karl. We're still with you, and I'll be there when you come out of that last gap.

Iain

Good to see the quest re-juvenated, and good choice of name (never was sure about Goliath). However, I share some of the concerns about the website. As it stands, the home page does not communicate that it is a record-breaking round-world walk (in fact I'm not sure what it does signify - would be interesting find out by trials with people unaware of Goliath or Karl), nor does it emphasise Karl. The old site did that much better, though the route and current location were harder to find. In addition, much of the key content is down the page, where research shows that many or most people will not find or bother to scroll to. Therefore I suggest:

• A revamp of the home page to give greater prominence to the journey and Karl himself (from Kurt Cobain to middle-period Orson Welles via two continents !) The Forsyth quote is good but not clear to what it refers (have to look at the bottom of the page for that).

• The below-page content linked separately from the home page, with Updates or News an additional top menu item. The 'Why' question is a good one, but what Karl has to say about it is diluted by the plethora of links from the home page (Media is duplicated, Location is in the Journey, and Humanist is what is below the page). I would keep the Donate button. And put the 'Why' link on the home page.

• On donations and 'causes', it seems that you have found one - a cause, that is - in the two armed forces charities whose links you include in the 'poppy' page. Your military background seems like a good justification for asking for support for these two causes, in particular Help for Heroes. I can't think of a better aim for you than that, and regardless of any views on Iraq, Afghanistan and the politicians' wars to come, I doubt that many would cavill at sponsorship. Have you thought of enlisting the help of Ben Fogle, whose recent journeys (including a North Pole quest) have been in support of Help For Heroes ?

• No link to or mention of your...

  Hi!

First of all i just want to say that you are one of the people who have inspired me the most and one of the people who has convinced me of letting go of my own fears and stop worrying about the "obligations" of the surrounding world and what society expects of us as human beings, being productive members of society etc. Everyone is not meant to be part of the rat race and babylon system, some must break the conventions and do it their own way, give courage to others to realize life is too short to sit behind an office desk and work day in and day out and commute on cattle train to and from work. YOU know exactly what life is about, you have experienced life and you know everything about sacrifices, pain and setbacks - but you also know everything about seeing the beauty in the small things in life, the goodness in people, the joys of life and about setting yourself a task and doing everything in your power to achieve it. You did not go out on this journey to become a hero, but you have become one. An everyday hero. And i can not believe how little love and respect people are showing you. Or why you are having such a hard time finding sponsors, that is beyond me. If i knew anyone i would let you know, if i had money i would help you (just as i would hope people would help me when i set out on my journey in a year or two's time). What i want to tell you is (which i hardly have to tell you but ill do it anyway just to remind you)

DONT EVER GIVE UP!!!

Anyone who is giving you a hard time is either dumb, envy or ignorant or a combination of all of them and should only serve as fuel for your journey when the going gets tough.. and surely you know what happens when the going gets tough? The tough gets going!!

And you my friend is tougher than 99.9% on this earth, living or dead, NEVER FORGET THAT!

Never doubt your ability and be proud of what you have done!

If you ever need a place to stay or help while in Finland, let me know!!

Keep going, never ...

  Hiya Karl

Its been a while since Ive been on the site and feel slighty guilty as a result .

The reason for the guilt is that when I read 'Giant Steps ' a few years ago .I was in the midst of hugely difficult situation which I wont bore you with . I found the book an inspirational read .My situation isnt fully resolved yet although there has been some changes .

We tend towards ' total success ' or ' total failure ' type thinking -particulary if one is a ruftytufty ex para .In reality most (ex paras inc ) of us are are in the middle of this continum .

Others looking from the outside of my situation view me as being stuck or failed . I view it as treading water -if you dont you drown .Its a skill and a resource in and of itself .

You seem to be treading water at present but I have no doubt you will get swimming again unlike some of the doubters who are too quick to critise .

Billy Connely ,in his biography has a saying ' F**k the begrudgers ' which sums them up nicely .

Take care Karl and thanks for all your efforts . They continue to inspire me .

Karl, I first heard about you several years back by way of a magazine published in Canada that has, since, ceased to be. Your ambitious and perhaps crazy quest has stayed in my mind and I Googled you earlier today - man walking round the world.

Now, having caught up with your plight, I am moved to say a couple of things for you to ponder, or toss as you see fit.

First, the entire website to me strikes me as impersonal. I had to search to find your name. It should have been front and centre, along with a picture of yourself. Humanize the quest, make yourself the centre of the expedition. It seems as if the expedition has taken over your life, when it should be you that is driving the expedition (although, my guess in reading is that you feel overwhelmed by the goal you set yourself and perhaps it has now become a bear on your back).

The second point I wish to make is about your blogging. The thrust is all mumbo-jumbo to me, about causes, and obstacles, sponsors and politics, visas and funds. I realize all of these are issues in your life, but surely to God the people that you have connected with overtime, the people you come in contact with on a daily basis should figure more prominently in your writings. Its about the journey, not the destination as the philosopher once said. Karl, embrace the daily and humanize your existence and tell us about your life, not your issues. Create the community, take us distant followers inside your life and show us the colour, the heartbeat and the geography through pictures. Believe me, if you tell your story as it is, rather than what it might be, the sponsors and supporters may flock to you like seagulls following a fishing boat to port.
Cheers on this Christmas Eve and please, don't take offence by my candour.
