    Karl:

For several years, I have been an enthusiastic individual supporter of your effort — sending in an odd $35 here, $50 there, telling all my friends about your odyssey, etc.

But today’s diatribe against “Abrahamic religions” has deeply alienated me — and, probably, many others. I think you underestimate the number of your followers who are people of faith.

I’ll be upfront: I’m an American “hardcore” Christian. I’m dumbfounded by your humanist rant. Perhaps it’s the result of your having grown up in Britain, which — in my view — has become a thoroughly “post-Christian” culture.

You’re obviously well-read. I urge you to broaden your reading list. Until the so-called “Enlightenment,” it was the religious views of scientists and explorers — Christians, Jews, even Muslims — that led to the cultural advances you enjoy today. It was the Muslim Avicenna and the Christians Thomas Aquinas and Francis Bacon who gave us the “scientific method.”

As a Christian, I see Man the way that God describes him in the Bible: the pinnacle of Creation, made in God’s own image. That is why your trek inspires me.

However, your railing — against the faiths that made Britain (and later, America) what they are — has popped the balloon of my inspiration.

God bless and keep you. Farewell.
